Bilawal to meet PM Shehbaz on canals issue

ISLAMABAD, Apr 21, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal
Bhutto Zardari is expected to meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on the
canals issue.

The canals issue has emerged as a bone of contention between the PPP and
the PML-N, of which the prime minister is a leader, in recent months,
leading to the fears that the PPP could even withdraw its support for
the coalition government.

Sources said that the meeting, at which Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad
Ali Shah would also be present, was likely to take place before April
25, the day the PPP would hold a rally in Sukkur on the issue.

They disclosed that the PPP would make it clear to the prime minister
that it wanted the government to drop its plan to carve out canals from
the River Indus.

Prime Minister Shehbaz, they informed, was also determined to address
the grievances of the PPP.

The PPP has been holding public gatherings in Sindh to voice its concern
over the building of canals, especially since the opposition parties in
the province have made it clear that it is a matter of life and death
for the people of the province, because if built, canals will turn their
lands barren
