Muhammad Yunus of Bangladesh paid tribute to the role of youth in his country, as he urged global leaders at the UN General Assembly to invest in the potential of their own countries’ younger generations to shape a fairer, more equitable world.
Mr. Yunus, Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government, credited the recent transformation in Bangladesh to the “power of the populace,” particularly its youth, who helped overthrow an autocratic regime. He noted that this youth-led movement has sparked a new political awareness in the country, championing human dignity, freedom, and social justice.
Mr. Yunus acknowledged the ongoing challenges but emphasized the resilience and determination of the youth as crucial for building a fairer and more prosperous future. He underscored the importance of democratic values and human rights, reaffirming Bangladesh’s commitment to peace and development.
He reminded the audience of Bangladesh’s historical fight for independence, highlighting how today’s youth continue to advocate for justice, equality, and a role in shaping their future. On a global scale, he connected youth empowerment to achieving Sustainable Development Goals, urging world leaders to invest in young citizens to address issues like poverty and climate change.
Concluding his remarks, Mr. Yunus reflected on the legacy of youth activism in Bangladesh, stating that while the world evolves, the values upheld by young people remain timeless. He affirmed that the pursuit of freedom and dignity for all should not be merely aspirational, but a right everyone deserves.
