“Crisis Erupting in Lebanon,” Guterres Warns Security Council

UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged the Security Council on Wednesday to “act in unison” to halt the rising violence between Israeli forces and Hezbollah militants along the Blue Line in southern Lebanon.
The UN Secretary-General warned that “a crisis is erupting in Lebanon,” highlighting that the exchanges of fire along the UN-patrolled separation line have intensified significantly. Monday marked one of Lebanon’s deadliest days in decades, as Israeli forces continued their bombardment of Hezbollah-controlled areas, escalating devastating electronic attacks that claimed hundreds of lives the previous week.
Guterres called for both sides to respect Lebanon’s sovereignty, emphasizing that the state must maintain full control over its weapons throughout the nation. “We support all efforts to strengthen the Lebanese Armed Forces,” he stated.
The village of Hebbariyeh in southern Lebanon lies partially in ruins due to the ongoing hostilities. The UN chief noted that the daily violations along the Blue Line breach critical Security Council resolutions.
